Kate Benzel, Professor Emeritus, University of Nebraska-Kearney. Owner and manager of Face at My Door Music coordinating programs on American Roots music: folk, country, blues, jazz.
Kate loves Modernist writers on both sides of the pond–Virginia Woolf and Carl Sandburg. They are an unlikely pair but in fact their realistic views of people reveal a sympathetic humanity. Her work with Woolf was interdisciplinary, focusing on Woolf’s use of impressionist artistry in both her images and lyricism. See her essay on “Kew Gardens.” Her productions of Prayers for the People: Carl Sandburg’s Poetry and Songs are also interdisciplinary, combining folk tunes from Sandburg’s The American Songbag (1927) with poetry of the city or the prairie or the American West. (Nebraska Arts Council). She also collaborates with Mike Adams on an educational program on Woody Guthrie: Re-envisioning 1930s America (Humanities Nebraska).
